Reading-Berks Guild of Craftsmen
Stanley G. Seltz Student Awards Program

The Stanley G. Seltz Student Awards Program is held every year in May at the general meeting of our membership. Industrial art and art teachers at every Berks County High School are encouraged to participate by choosing an outstanding work of a senior to present at the program, in the categories of fine art, crafts, and industrial arts. Every student submitting a piece receives a certificate designed by fraktur artist Ruthann Hartung and a monetary award, and after our chapter`s standards committee juries the work, awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each of the three categories are given. In addition, two special awards may be presented if the standards committee feels there is a piece of extraordinary quality- The Stanley Seltz Award for Excellence in Craftsmanship and the Dick Loeper Industrial Arts Award. At the presentation of awards, each student is asked to tell us about the work, and after the program, our members have an opportunity to talk to the students. Over the years, participation has steadily grown, and our members look forward to seeing the broad range of media and artistic ability of these emerging artisans.

The awards program was named in honor of Stanley Seltz, a longtime member of our chapter and avid supporter of the guild and the arts in general. His wood carvings can be found in many homes and businesses, both locally and nationwide, and his influence can be seen in the many woodcarvers in our area.

Woodworker Dick Loeper was a longtime guild member well known for the quality of his craftsmanship. He created functional furniture including cradles for his grandchildren, and wonderful large cars, and also wood carvings. His work is a lasting legacy.
