Reading-Berks Guild of Craftsmen
Student Awards
The Guild currently sponsors cash awards at the Berks County Intermediate Unit Students Awards.
The Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU), an Educational Service Agency, sponsors an annual art exhibit featuring the works of many Berks County area high school students. The artwork submitted to the show is diverse and shows off the wonderful talents of area students. Artwork categories include printmaking, oil, watercolor and acrylic painting, calligraphy, dimensional works, fiber arts, photography, pottery, original computer art, jewelry, basket weaving, pastel and drawings. The Berks County Intermediate Unit has been the sponsor of this exhibit since 1981.
Every student submitting a piece receives a certificate designed by fraktur artist Ruthann Hartung and a monetary award, chosen by our standards committee.
Stanley G. Seltz Student Award
The Stanley Seltz Award for Excellence in Craftsmanship and the Dick Loeper Industrial Arts Award.
The awards program was named in honor of Stanley Seltz, a longtime member of our chapter and avid supporter of the guild and the arts in general. His wood carvings can be found in many homes and businesses, both locally and nationwide, and his influence can be seen in the many woodcarvers in our area.
Dick Loeper Industrial Arts Award.
Woodworker Dick Loeper was a longtime guild member well known for the quality of his craftsmanship. He created functional furniture including cradles for his grandchildren, and wonderful large cars, and also wood carvings. His work is a lasting legacy.
